| Sometimes it’s more important
to know what kind of person has the disease than what
kind of disease the person has. -- Sir William Osler |
| HISTORY AND BACKGROUND |
Oyster Point Psychological Practice was
incorporated in 1984 with a change to the current name
in 1989. During its early days, the practice focused primarily
upon assessment and psychotherapy services for “conduct-disordered”
adolescents. Interventions emphasized brief strategic
psychotherapy and family therapy with special attention
to the role of "hidden abuse and neglect" (e.g.,
father absence) and trauma victims.
A small but significant number of these patients faced
actual or threatened litigation, and psychological factors
sometimes provided a context that could be viewed as mitigating
by the court. Documentation and/or testimony regarding
accomplishments in therapy and the imposition of successful
behavior management techniques prior to trial often resulted
in leniency in the disposition of these charges. Many
of these former patients are now successful citizens and
have had no further involvement with the legal system.
The forensic component of Oyster Point Psychological Practice
has grown to include persons of all ages, who are involved
in legal proceedings or those who anticipate litigation
in criminal, juvenile, or domestic relations court. An
office in White Stone serves the Middle Peninsula and
the Northern Neck. |
